The Behavioral Determinants Framework (BDF) leverages principles from social psychology and behavioral economics to identify and address the key influences on human behavior. It delineates 12 critical influence areas, utilizing a strategic combination of targeted questions and doer/non-doer analyses to facilitate precise interventions that focus on the roots of behavior, not just the behavior itself.
Originating from a 1991 National Institute of Mental Health workshop on the AIDS epidemic, BDF was initially influenced by renowned social psychologists such as Albert Bandura and Martin Fishbein. It has since evolved, integrating modern research from behavioral economics and social identity to continuously adapt to new scientific advancements.
BDF categorizes influences into 12 key areas, including consequences, risk, emotion, and social norms, integrating insights from decades of social science research and contemporary contributions from experts like Daniel Kahneman and BJ Fogg. Its efficacy relies on formative research that distinguishes between actors based on their engagement in specific behaviors, enabling strategists to apply targeted interventions.
Since 2015, BHO has been actively implementing, refining, and promoting BDF as a transformative tool to align business objectives with societal goals. Our workshops support strategic collaboration, helping clients to develop growth strategies and insights across both digital and physical platforms, establishing BDF as a foundational element of modern commercial and organizational strategy.
